Alex Van Halen recently discussed his intention to employ artificial intelligence (AI) to finish the band’s unfinished songs in an interview with Rolling Stone.
Alex is listening to unheard Van Halen songs that he co-recorded with his late brother Eddie, a trailblazing guitarist who died of cancer in 2020 after a valiant battle. The band has been keeping these unfinished songs in their vault until they are finished.
AI to Bring Unfinished Van Halen Songs Back to Life
Alex says that a lot of the unpublished content is made up of brief guitar riffs or musical concepts that haven’t been developed into whole songs.
He explained, A collection of licks does not constitute a song.
He reached out to OpenAI to see if it could study Eddie’s unique playing technique and produce original guitar solos in his brother’s vein in an attempt to close the gap.
Alex sees this as a possible method to continue Eddie’s musical legacy, even though it might take years.
Alex also mentioned that he would want to have Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin sing on the unreleased songs.
Though he admitted that he hadn’t spoken to Plant in decades, he expressed hope that, given the correct circumstances, these concepts would come to pass.
Regarding its unpublished discography, Van Halen has always been a mysterious band.
Alex disclosed last year that he and Eddie had recorded a substantial amount of unfinished material.
He even hinted at the final song they collaborated on, appropriately titled Unfinished.
The band’s former bassist, Michael Anthony, also hopes that Wolfgang, Eddie’s son and a talented musician, would someday visit the archives to look at his father’s work.
Wolfgang has categorically denied that Van Halen will ever reunite without his father, even though there is a ton of unreleased material. He maintained that without Eddie, it wouldn’t feel right to perform the band’s well-known songs.
