Tesla wants Gigafactory Texas to double in size

Key Takeaways
  • Tesla has applied to expand Gigafactory Texas twofold.
  • By the end of 2025, work could be completed.
  • The Model Y, Cybertruck, and ultimately the Cybercab are produced at the site.

Tesla has applied to significantly increase its domestic EV production and double the capacity of Gigafactory Texas.

Ten Tesla applications that would further expand the Austin-area manufacturing have been identified by the Austin Business Journal. The projects listed in the filing include standard car assembly components like “body in white” (where the body is assembled before other components arrive), casting, and painting, though it’s unclear exactly how the automaker will use the expanded space.

With the goal of having Gigafactory Texas expanded by the end of 2025, Tesla intends to begin construction as soon as possible.

Since the corporation destroyed its communications team years ago, it is not available for comment.

The company’s strategy heavily relies on the Texas factory. It produces both the Cybertruck and the popular Model Y. The facility is also in charge of making the 4680 battery cells for the Cybertruck and is ready to start making the autonomous Cybercab.

Even as it diversifies its initiatives, a twice-as-large Gigafactory might help Tesla meet North American demand (and keep US tax credits). With a redesigned Model Y (dubbed the “Juniper”) anticipated as early as 2025 and more reasonably priced EVs anticipated in the first half of the year, it might also be significant.

Additionally, Tesla is under pressure to maintain its impressive performance. As its deliveries improved in Q3, it exceeded Wall Street’s forecasts. A larger Gigafactory in the company’s home nation is essential to demonstrating to investors that Tesla can continue to grow its sales statistics.
